Sketching Ideas
Before I spend any time on high-fidelity design, I started sketching to share my ideas with the team.
Based on what I've learned throughout the years designing for this age group ( 8-12 ), any character that looks childish can backfire instead of getting their attention. The main reason is that one of the common comments that I hear when we interview kids is " This is for babies!", " This is for children, I'm not".
So, I wanted to create a character that's cute and funny to grab their attention while it doesn't look childish. One of the simple changes that we can have in design is to refrain from designing large eyes. Also, stupid facial expressions instead of innocent faces is another great way to prevent the character to become too "childish", of course, in the eyes of our target market who don't see themselves as children anymore.
After sharing with the group, we decided to focus on the creatures that live in water, since our game was happening in a river.
Our target market are children age 8-12 years old. What i've found out based on competitor's research was that funny and stupid characters are the best one to attract this age group. So I started sketching different ideas to share with the team.
I came up with two ideas that were related to the water and river. The first one was Mr. Tube!
The second one was a beaver, which had a cartoony and minimalistic style.
Next, I chose colors that help the character to stand out on the game's blue background,
